When I want something, I go for it. Nothing stops me when I want to accomplish a goal. It always starts with an idea. I then teach myself what is needed to fulfill my vision.
If I am trying to teach myself a new makeup technique, I will watch copious amounts of YouTube. I will practice.
I wanted to treat myself to a real camera, and teach myself the art of photography. I bought my first Canon DSLR, spent one afternoon going over the basics of shooting in manual with my Uncle, read tons of articles, and practiced. A lot. It’s trial and error.
I wanted to start a blog. I was mentored by a girlfriend. I priced everything out, compared all of my options. Made pros vs. cons lists. I had a vision and built my website all by myself. On a side note, I remember being in middle school and using Myspace. I taught myself how to use Photoshop. I taught myself how to code and create my own profile layouts. I wanted to have an original profile. Looking back, that was pretty impressive.
The message here… is that the time is now. If you have been longing to pick up a new hobby and try something new, there is no better time to do so. In this day and age, the resources available to you are endless. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you know somebody that has the experience under their belt. Advice is gold.
Why wait until 2019 to start something new? The time is now. There is no day like today. Yes, I am quoting Rent. But in all seriousness, I hope this is the push you need to just try something that you have been wanting to try. It will give you a sense of purpose, maybe some additional self-esteem, and it’s something to work towards. It doesn’t happen over night, but that is what makes it rewarding. To know you’ve taught yourself a new skill is a great feeling.
Let me know in the comments below if you have tried something new this year. Did you succeed? Did it turn into a hobby, or possibly more? What inspired you to try something new? What resources did you utilize? If not, what do you hope to accomplish?
